Bangladesh Rice Research Institute
BRRI ( Bangladesh Rice Research Institute) is an agricultural research Institute in Bangladesh. It is specialized in the research of rice production.
BRRI was established in October, 1970 in joydebpur, Gazipur. The institute has an outstanding contrition to the food security of Bangladesh. The institute is supported by 10 regional stations at Barisal, Khulna, Kustia, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Bhanga, Habiganj Cumilla, Bonagazi and Rangamati .
What do they do?
There are 18 research divisions to take care of different disciplines such a plant Breeding , genetic resources and seeds, Agronomy, Irrigation , Grain Quality and nutrition, soil science, water management, entomology, Rice farming system, plant pathology, agricultural statistics, agricultural
Economics, farm management, farm machinery and maintenance, research activities trainings and so on. This institute works with all the sectors mentioned before to increase the quantity and quality of rice production through research. The overall management of the institute is vested on a 13 members board of management, chained by the Director General. BRRI now has 134 scientists and 344 supporting staff working at Joedebpur and it’s 9 other regional stations.
Research️ works:
So far it has developed 67 high yielding rice varieties are cultivated in about 80% of total rice production areas and contribute almost 91% of total rice production of the country. The major achievements of BRRI has been the development 37 high yielding modern variety ( MV) rice strains adoptable to different ecosystem since it’s establishment. MV rices presently cover 90% of the Boro ( winter rice), 25-30% of the Aus ( summer rice) and 50-55% of the Taman ( wet Season rice) areas of Bangladesh.
Awards
BRRI receives the highest state recognition Bangabandhu National Agricultural Award in recognition of significant work in climate smart and high yielding rice Varieties. The division was also listed for its progress in Golden Rice research.
